Union Pacific Horse-Baggage-Auto

#1786
#1766
#1792
Full width end door detail

As the name suggests, these head end cars transported horses and automobiles across the UP system. This bulky cargo was loaded in one of the ends through distinctive full width doors. These cars had a number of side door variations across similar series, and I’ve modeled three variations representing car numbers 1766, 1786, and 1792.

Amfleet I Coach and Cafe

I like to tell people I named this company ‘First Person Scale Models’ because my projects are only economical if I’m the first person to make them. So then why would I model the ubiquitous Amfleet, as already produced by both Walthers and Bachmann? Firstly, because a customer commissioned me to, but research revealed that both RTR models have fairly serious inaccuracies, and their limited availability and high cost may make printed models desirable for someone who already owns a printer and is not afraid to paint them themselves. As a result, I did my best to do justice to these cars that many of us (including myself) have spent so much time riding. Plus, these models will give me a head start on a number of possible future projects, like Metroliners, Cab cars, and the SPV-2000

I’ve developed a heavyweight passenger car base model that can be adapted into a number of different prototypes. I can also use this base to easily make parts that are compatible with Walthers heavyweights (for example, sides, roofs, ends). Below are a few models designed using this base. I hope to design a similar base for streamlined cars soon if there’s interest.

C&O/CGW/C&NW Combine

This C&O/CGW/C&NW Combine is available to purchase for $69.00 directly from Tom, another model railroad 3D printing entrepreneur, who commissioned the models. You can contact him here. The model uses IHC trucks.

GN RPO/Baggage

The modular design of my heavyweight base allows cars to be designed in parts which can interface with Walthers cars. For example, a shortened Walthers heavyweight floor could replace the above printed floor, and a modified Walthers roof can be substituted as well. This opens up a new realm of possibilities for those who want to modify their Walthers cars with unique roofs, ends, etc. Also note the steps, which are printed as one piece with the car shell.

Delaware and Hudson Well Flats 16160-16164

Finished model offered by Accurate Custom Finishing
With large pulley load
With Francis turbine runner load

Finished and painted examples of this model are now being offered by Accurate Custom Finishing! ACF requested a couple of unique loads, so I modeled a generic wheel or pulley and a Francis turbine runner. I also made liberal use tapered holes to create the illusion that the deck is much thinner than it really is. Look around in the 3D view to experience it yourself! Another unintended benefit is that one could actually secure loads to the deck with the right size nails.

One might think that I could pretty easily expand my business by offering to design and print more than just model railroad-related items. On the contrary, I find that the bulk of my repeat customers are interested in the ultra-niche, even by model railroading standards. One such group are the hardcore modelers of the NCDOT commuter railroad in North Carolina. The prototype uses a mix of rebuilt 50s and 60s passenger equipment as well as older EMD commuter power. The .STL files for some of these rebuilt cars are available for download, as well as .STEP files that enable you to easily alter the window configuration and recreate other unique prototypes.
