Southern Railway Asheville, NC Station
Tucked in a corner of the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders’ Asheville Yard is this digitally designed and manufactured station model. This station was selectively compressed from the actual former Southern Railway station in Asheville North Carolina. The core of the model was printed using FDM technology, while the windows and dome were printed in high-detail resin. To achieve accurate roof and stucco wall textures, Plastruct shingle sheet and sandpaper respectively were laser-cut to exactly fit the model. The roof was designed using sheet metal modelling techniques, so simple flat prints were folded into the correct roof shape. Currently, I don’t have regular access to a laser cutter, but this project serves as an example of what future 3D printed structure projects could look like.
